As we already know, web 2.0 tools are everwhere, and are being heralded as the tools in which people can communicate with each other for various reasons. I have been getting in touch with many video directors on youtube.com, asking them to look at my blog and eave comments on the questions that are being asked. As you can see, I have only recieved one comment on the questions that I asked, and I am assuming this is because no one has read their messages on youtube.com!

Issues Around TV

As I am still trying to find research surrounding web 2.0 tools and user generated content, I have recently stumbled across an article defining what user generated content can be classed as, seeing as though the entire media sphere is continually growing.

A comment made by David Katz was -

“...What's the definition of television. ... If we’re going to narrowly define television as the content created by broadcast networks and cable networks that comes in on the big screen in your living room, that's one thing ... If television is more broadly defined going forward as that video entertainment experience really consumed in the home or potentially on portable devices or your cell phones… you're talking about an unlimited universe, you're talking about a place where content can come from anywhere, everyone's a distributor if they want to be, user generated content allows the proliferation of content and breaks down barriers that existed before."

Creative Commons License

A Blog recently written by a colleague of mine. It surrounds the creative commons license issues.

Last Thursday Andrea Rota spoke to us about issues of copyright and creative commons. As a result we all added a Creative Commons license to our blogs to protect our ideas without restricting their use for others research. There seem to be mixed feeling towards the ideas of copyrighting in the Blogsphere. Full copyright, i would seem to many, goes against the nature of blogging and the idea of sharing information, copy and pasting from one blog to another. There seems to be more support for Creative Commons were the user is able to choose the level of protection and ideas can be shared as long as there is adequate attribuition to the author. This is particularly relevant for a research blog, such as this.

Yet Another Online Video Site

While doing a google search for 'online video content', the first site to come up on the list thanks to the googlebot, was www.blinkx.com.

Although this is not the case study site, I have decided to enter this site within my blog as it is a reflection of the site youtube.com, in the sense that you can watch videos, tag them (if you have uploaded them), as well as use an rss feed within certain video 'groups' to be informed on any new additions.

The interface is slightly different from (and in my opinion better than) youtube, as the videos that are within a specific group (music, news, user generated) have little video clips placed on them which indicate what the acual content is.

Maybe this is because no one cares about the use of the web 2.0 tools, or what it means for the development of the web. They just want to watch videos on the internet??

I suppose I'll have to keep searching for interested users.

I am still unsure as to how I am supposed to document how the many users of the internet are sharing videos, in the same way as my colleague Lizzie has done about the use of photography on the web. I will therefor take the opportunity to ask the users of youtube if they are users of various other video fcontent sites, as well as how it is that they personally alert friends as to what content can be found online. Maybe other bloggers can also help me?

Not all video blogs are created by users in order to create laughs and be shared amongst colleagues. Some videos are laced with political messages, religious ideals, and conspiracy theorys. The following videos are all examples of these specific topics. These videos (on youtube.com) contain extra information as to where to find further information regarding the topics shown. A recent video on US Politics. This was a video used as a part of the 'Impeach Bush And Blair' movement, launched on youtube by unhappy users. This was a video concerning an interview with Tony Blair about the Israel/Palestine conflicts. Conspiracy theory videos. There are also many of these surrounding the 9/11 events, especially the recent 'Short Change' Videos, which have been mentioned in national press. As you can see, the general topics may be the same, but there can be different ways to explore this.

Social Software

Social software is no new concept, as portrayed by JCR Licklider in his ideas of using 'networked computing to connect people to boost their knowledge and their ability to learn'. Maybe without realising, you have been witnessing this phenomenon in effect, as it consists of blogs, one of which you are reading now, podcasts, videoblogs, and networking sites such as Hi5, MySpace, Facebook, and Facebox. These sites are not like traditional websites, in the fact that they are not fixed sites/pages, but are easily added to by users.

Social software does not indicate a sharp break with the old but, rather, the gradual emergence of a new type of practice.

Microcontent

Microcontent surrounds web 2.0 in the sense that blogs are created by users adding small text to the blog, rather than creating whole pages to house the posts. In saying this, web 1.0 also contained early forms of microcontent, as users regularly sent and received emails, forum posts, and text messages.

If you have ever used a search browser, you will have been employing the use of tags, small text 'tags' that identify the particular content ashaving relevance to a specific subject.

Openness

The openness of this information, or the 'finderability' of the content, the sharing of this information, the taking and placing elsewhere of the content, is highly dependant on two way traffic. This means it is dependant on users allowing other users to access their content, such as making comments on blog posts.

You Have A Vlog? Is That An Illness?

No. Vlogging is blogging. Just that its with video, rather than text. A basic description of what this phenomenon is can be found over at wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlogging

Though many vlogs are collaborative efforts, the majority of vlogs and vlog entries are authored by individuals. These individuals are likely to be media producers, as they have the indepth knowledge needed to film, convert, and upload the footage. More professional vlogs can be created by small teams.

On the other hand, some vlogs are uploaded by people just messing around with a webcam, or other medium quality video recorder, just seeing what they can create between themselves and friends. Sometimes this can prove to be quite funny!

How Are Young Media Producers Sharing Their Work Using Web 2.0?

I have chosen to change my research idea to a topic which is more closely related to a community which I feel I am a part of: MEDIA PRODUCERS! This decision came about because I am interested in keeping in touch with how up and coming media moguls are sharing ideas and sharing work between each other. As I am also a budding media producer, I feel this research will also help me to further improve my own interactivity with other media producers. Ok, so I was searching for some more videos of internet poker players and how they exchange tips and tricks via the network, and I came across this guy on youtube.com. He is merely showing off what is known as 'Chip Tricks', which is something that players do to pass the time while playing games. I thought I'd enter it as it relates to web 2.0 tools in many ways. 1 - Its online content, easily viewed and easily shared. 2 - Other poker players can watch this, and if they have any comments to make, such as a thank you or replying with further 'chip tricks', they can leave their messages with the author of the content.

Hi people, I have found a few podcasts which relates to poker players, and although I have only listened to the first 5 minutes (forgive me, I was busy!), it seems that this is an interesting podcast, recorded by poker players and poker hosts, and details the feelings felt during high competition tournaments, aswell as sharing tips that poker players can use to win. RSS - Is It Really Simple?

Really Simple Syndication. I was unaware as to what this was before, as I didnt understand what it was that RSS done for you. I thought it was some new code that I wouldnt be able to understand. Now I understand that RSS can be likened to bookmarking, but as a 'live' state, as the RSS will inform you as to when changes have been made to a specific blog or website. You can keep track of this information through using sites such as bloglines.com (only because I do!!). RSS is a good way of keeping up to date with your favourite blogs, and your favourite websites, all from the click of a button. What network to explore?

I am interested in researching how internet users connect with each other using networking technology. My initial ideas which I feel I would like to investigate are the uses of msn, and I want to look into internet gambling as a networking tool. I am interested in these as I am a user of both platforms, although I do not gamble with real money!! While you play the poker games, you can speak with the people you are playing with, and you usually find out that you are playing people from all over Europe, and the Americas.
